28 Weeks Later starts off where 28 Days Later ended. The zombies have overrun Britain with some people managing to flee to safe territory. 28 weeks have passed and it appears that all of the zombies have died from starvation, and the decision is made to start repatriating a small portion of the citizens who are currently holding up in refugee camps. The U.S. military is providing aid and securing the country as people are moved in. It’s not long after people settle in that the rage virus is once again unleashed.

28 Weeks Later

The U.S. military was correct about all of the zombies being dead, but there is one survivor who is acting as a carrier of the disease without exhibiting any of the symptoms. With her still being able to infect people, it doesn’t take long before District 1 (the small area of London that has been re-populated) is overrun with the infected once again. The U.S Military soon loses control, and in order to contain the problem, a decision is made to take everyone out, zombie or not. 28 Weeks Later follows a small group trying to get out of London as the extermination begins. The focus is on two children who’s mother happens to be the special “carrier” of the disease. The hope is that one of them has the same trait which may be the key in helping to find a cure.

As its predecessor, the visuals and music in 28 Weeks Later are awesome. The cinematography is solid with a lot of cool shots. As you watch it you get the sense that this is not a typical zombie movie. The story is a little bit lacking though. It’s really just a run and hide movie with the characters trying to get to safety. They did throw in the “special genetic trait” story which is cool, but it really didn’t play much of a part in the movie. I would liked to have seen this be explored further. I’m sure they keeping it in mind for a sequel.

It was interesting to see the characters fleeing from the military and the zombies. I can see where the military was coming from, but it adds a component of who’s worse? The zombies are just “doing what the do”, but the military who was supposed to be helping these people get their lives back in order have abandoned them. They are trying to exterminate everyone because of their own failures with keeping the area secure.

I was really excited about seeing this movie since I was such a fan of the first one in the series. Even though I thought the visuals were incredible, the lack of story prevents me from giving it high rating. If you’re a fan of zombie flicks or a well shot film like I am, you’re probably going to get some enjoyment out of it. If neither of these points do it for you, there’s no need for you to rush out and see it. Waiting for DVD will be perfectly acceptable.

Memorable Scene
The opening scene is set in a rural home where a group of people have taken refuge from the infected. Everything is sealed, and no one comes in or out. As they are all sitting down for a meal, the zombies infiltrate, and mayhem ensues. This scene is completely out of control as the zombies tear through the house and it’s victims. Even though the camera is always shaking, and not giving the viewer a good, clean view of what is going on, it’s not difficult to fill in the blanks. The scene is extremely gory and it definitely gets your heart pumping.
