Shooter stars Mark Wahlberg as Bob Lee Swagger, a former U.S. sniper who turned his back on the military after he and his partner were left to the wolves behind enemy territory. Now living alone in the mountains, Swagger is approached by top government officials to help stop an assassination attempt on the President of the United States. After showing some reluctance, Swagger gets on board and is tasked with using his sniper instincts to try and determine the course of action of the would-be assassin. Once the assassination attempt is made, Swagger finds himself in hot water as he realizes that the crime has been pinned on him, and that he was the patsy from the beginning. Swagger teams up with a fresh out of the academy FBI agent, Nick Memphis, played by Michael Pena, as they both run for their lives, and try to prove their innocence.

Shooter starring Mark Wahlberg

I was quite excited when this movie was first announced, but I never actually got around to seeing it in the theatre. I finally got to see it on DVD recently and I found myself completely enamored with the film for the first hour. It really reminded me of Oliver Stone’s JFK. The whole lead-up to the assassination and the framing of the Swagger by the high government officials did a nice job of building the plot and setting the path to which the film was going to go down. Or so I thought.

The second half of this film moved from intelligent and thrilling to a complete shoot-em-up, testosterone induced Rambo style movie. As entertaining as it is to see big explosions and shooting of faces, it was a real shock to the system to have the film make a complete u-turn. If the movie was shooting and explosions from the get-go, I would likely have enjoyed it more.

I’m a pretty big fan of Mark Wahlberg and generally enjoyed him in this movie. There’s something that just really bad-ass about him, and it doesn’t come off as fake. Even from an early film like Fear, Wahlberg has just fit into these bad boy roles. Danny Glover plays Colonel Isaac Johnson, the mastermind behind the entire conspiracy. I used to really enjoy this guy, but recent films of his I’ve just not been impressed. I’m not sure if it’s his old age, or what, but his speech seems to be really forced, and I just don’t find him convincing anymore.

This film is definitely a renter, and I’m glad I didn’t end up seeing it in the theatre. If you are in the mood for some serious action, this film delivers. Just don’t expect to have a great story with clever twists. It’s pretty much goes right down the path you are expecting it to. Overall I was disappointed with this movie, not really because it was bad, but mostly because I had high expectations for it. I just think it could have been so much more, and the early part of the movie seems to suggest that as well.

Memorable Scene
There is a scene where Swagger and Memphis have agreed to meet with the Colonel on a snowcapped mountain. Suspecting that they are going to be double-crossed, Swagger and Memphis have a plan of their own. While Memphis acts as the decoy, Swagger perches himself undercover and picks off all of the Colonel’s snipers one by one.
