This film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name, where a young man with an incredible sense of smell becomes obsessed with creating the most sumptuous of perfumes. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (played by Ben Whishaw) knew he was different as a young child, and he spent most of his youth identifying different odors in the world around him. The first time he encounters the smell of perfume is when his obsession begins, and it was when he smells the natural scent of an innocent young woman that his obsession takes a murderous turn. Jean-Baptiste would then spend his time trying to capture the scent of young women he murdered in the form of perfume, leading to a public paranoia as more and more women continued to disappear.

Perfume : The Story of a Murderer

Perfume : The Story of a Murderer takes on a difficult task in conveying the sense of smell on film, and I do feel that the filmmakers pulled it off, mostly through the acting of Ben Whishaw. His role contains very little dialog, but it is his actions and mannerisms that make his performance so great. This movie would have been a complete disaster if his performance was a failure. He also does a great job of capturing Jean-Baptiste’s obsession with finding the perfect scent.

Beyond the good acting, the film is also incredibly nice to look at. Set in 18th century France, we get a look at everything from the dirty streets of Paris to the beautiful rural areas in the countryside. This only goes so far though, as I felt the movie was a tad bit long, running in at nearly two-and-a-half hours. I particularly don’t have a problem with long movies, but I just felt that in this case of Perfume, some of the scenes started to become repetitive.

If you are interested in seeing a unique film, Perfume : The Story of a Murderer is definitely a good choice. With beautifully shot scenes, and solid acting, this film will take you down a tragic path where a young man’s incredible gift leads to an murderous obsession. For those who have not read the book, or who know little about the story may have greater enjoyment as the film unfolds before them.

Memorable Scene
The climax of this film is quite shocking, and may be offensive to some. I honestly was taken by complete surprise when the scene started to play out. I think that some may find it is over the top, but I personally think that it works well with story, and does a good job of illustrating what Jean-Baptiste was trying to achieve. I don’t want to give away the scene, but like I said, it is a shocker.
